What is an effective way to deter aggressive (dangerous and attacking dogs)?

ultrasonic dog whistle

Honestly, some days I dont even feel safe walking around my own neighborhood. Dogs charge at me all of the time.
I need something that will deter them completely. Im not talking about a whistle used for training your dog to stop barking; I need something that can be used as self defense against a dangerous and attacking dog. I dont care if it harms the dog or causes serious damage (its my safety over theirs).

Pepper spray has been suggested, but im worried about not being able to aim with enough accuracy given that a dog can charge at me pretty fast. Do ultrasonic devices like the dazer 2 work for repelling aggressive dogs?
If military grade dog repellent exists, then thats what I want! What do police and postal service workers use?

By the way, dont bother suggesting therapy or revising my ethics towards the treatment of attacking dogs (if a dog attacks me, it is NOT innocent). I will not even consider these suggestions.
sure, I will just call animal control as im being mauled by a dog. No. You see by the time I discover a dog that is going to attack me, animal control or law enforcement cant respond fast enough. I need to defend myself.

Again, I dont care if the dog is aggressive by nature or by the way he was trained nor do I care about how he got off his leash in the first place. Once I am being attacked, its basic survival instincts, its kill or be killed (I dont necessarily need to kill the attacking dog, its just an expression)

Oh also, I dont like the idea of hitting the dog and relying on the force of the blow. In my experience swinging or even just carrying such a weapon can be perceived by the dog as being more threatening, making it more likely to attack.

My wife is accosted regularly when she is out with her Guide dog. When she is by herself and this happens, she uses an air horn. When I am with her and this happens, I have used pepper spray and a stun rod. I have used them successfully on many occasions.

Loud horn. I can’t remember what they’re called. I bought one at the store (have the same problem as you). You should see the dogs turn tail when I blow it LOL neighbors don’t like it, hell my dog doesn’t like it but at least I don’t have to get into a confrontation with one.

A couple things, never run and avoid eye contact. Running triggers their natural response to prey and eye contact is viewed as a threat.

If you have that many dangerous dogs roaming around call animal control to have them picked up. MOST dogs aren’t mean, just because you were attacked(I’m sorry) doesn’t mean all dogs are going to attack you. You seriously need to get over it. Its not healthy. Dogs can protect you, it bad people who train bad dogs and its NOT their fault they were trained that way, so think about it. You do need therapy, it is innocent dogs are loyal and only do what they have been taught. Get that through your thick skull. No one can help you unless you help yourself.

I would advise the pepper spray, you can be calm enough to know where to aim. You don’t need to harm an animal.

Steel toed shoes, maybe. And brass knuckles. The owners need to take better care of their dogs. Once you get the dog to stop attacking you, try to get the phone number on its collar. Report the owners for not locking their dog in or keeping it on a leash.

If there is a persistent problem with aggressive dogs, law enforcement needs to be involved. Leash laws and dangerous dog laws exist for a reason, and a few decent fines on these dog’s owners should encourage better containment and training.

The most effective deterrent I’ve found is to carry a walking stick with me. A good blow to face will stop all but the most persistent attacking dog and can also be used to block or deflect a bite. We’ve had trouble with some dogs down the street who bother you if you walk your dog past – a combination of avoiding eye contact or excessive noise when going past and carrying a decent stick has reduced their attacks to nil on me and my dog.

An air horn would probably do it, as would pepper spray or mace, but a physical blockage and weapon like a walking stick would likely be more useful if the dog really, really meant business.

Again: aggressive dogs need to be reported to animal control or the local police as children, the elderly, and many others not capable of self-defense may also walk in those places.

If i was on my bicycle and a dog started chasing me. I would turn the bicycle toward him and chase him for a while lol. worked every time

now if you are on foot and a dog comes charging have your baseball bat handy and whack him one.

waiving the bat may even give him a second thought about bothering you anyways

i have seen those airhorns in the party supply section at wal-mart

The others in here have good insight you should be able to walk down the street without being harassed by some one’s dog

sounds to me like you are overly afraid of dogs and cannot tell when they are aggressive or just doing their normal behavior. Dogs will bark and run to see who is passing their territory. They may appear menacing, or as if they are charging, but that is their normal behavior. Aggression in a dog is a truly scary thing when they DO attack. An attack is when they actually bite you or if they are growling exessively. Be able to recognize the signs of a mean dog. Hair on the back standign on end, growling and not barking, staring you down and very still or creeping slowly toward you with these signs, tail down and not wagging. You need to have an assertive behavior, puff your chest out, walk with authority, do not make eye contact yet remain aware of them too, show them that you are not an easy target. Carry a large back pack that you can carry between you and the dog to ward them off if needed. If they do charge you with aggressive demeanor described above then firmly tell them NO or STAY in a loud and commanding voice. Never run! And a side note. If you do do something to a dog the you feel is aggressive (pepper spray or any other thing) they remember that. dogs feel that you are teasing them or mistreating them and they will never forget that. Those types of things can actually be provoking to a dog and I would refrain from using those type of tacktics unless you are litterally fighting with a dog that is biting you. If they are running toward you barking, pay attention to their body language, is the tail wagging, their ears up at attention or curiousity, bouncing around? Then They are eager to meet a new friend. I had a dog that sounded scary, and always barked and ran to the fence when people passed by. However his tail was always wagging and he never growled. He was the gentle giant and so very sweet to everyone he met. Most of the time a dogs size is the only reason they seem agressive too. They may have a scary and loud bark, but always check for that tail and make sure is wags!!

first things first i would probably study canine behavior, that way you know if a dog is showing signs of agressions. before a dog actually charges someone, another animal, or something they will show signs that you need to back off… study the behavior, so you’re knowledgable when a dog attack may happen

something that is made that will force a dog’s jaws open is called a break stick. i might carry one of those around just in case you’re actually being attacked you have a way to pry open the dog’s jaw.

i think the blow horn idea is probably a good idea, either that or pepper spray… i mean if you have that many dogs wandering around that are agressive towards humans i would also be fearful. i wouldn’t suggest kicking or punching or hitting the animal, it’s likely to make the dog grip and bite harder or just continue to attack because it’s now being attacked. something like a blow horn might scare away the dog before it gets that close, and it would avoid you harming the dog if you didn’t have to… and pepper spray i would also think would scare away the dog, if it was close enough you could spray it, and it would probably try to run away to get away from whatever was making its face hurt. so it’s almost like the blow horn would scare it, if it wasn’t scared use the pepper spray, and if the dog actually started to attack use the break stick to pry open its mouth to get it off of you.

good luck, and whatever happens i hope you are not attacked. as much as i love dogs, which i really really love dogs… i also think that your safety is number one. those dogs should not be allowed to wander around by their owners especially if they show signs of human agression… and if they’re strays they should be picked up by AC.

    1. Call animal control
    2. If you do not like the idea of pepper spray, how about a stun baton? They have the kind that extends to 21 inches when you push the button. It also has a very loud siren and a flashing light- that may be enough to scare the dog or any attacker! It may be found here:
