What is the best deterrent to have to discourage break-ins by thieves? ?

dog deterrent

It would seem to make sense that if it were difficult to break into your home a thief would rather break into your neighbor’s home instead.

One of my aunt’s hubby layered a perimeter of a hedge in front with razor wire, cactus & sharpened steel spikes and assorted shrubs & flowers (to conceal the traps from the house’s view). They don’t like having dogs gallivanting on their property. Their front gates are electrified. My dad likes to say "at least they haven’t put in a moat with alligators – . . . yet".

A good alarm system and a mean freaking dog.

    A dog, and a well-lit property.

The scenario you’ve described is mentally deranged. Plus illegal, I’m sure.

Anything that wont kill them. Unless the burglar is of a threat to your life then it is against the law to set up traps that can cause fatal injuries. If you were to set such traps you would actually be held liable to the burglar if he were to get injured while breaking into your house! So I would recommend a dog and an alarm system. I would check with a lawyers in your area before I start setting harmful traps.

    Dog.

You have to worry about liability for traps.

I know, I know. But the law assumes it’s some 6 year old going after a baseball who gets all cut up.

a dog is statistically a great deterrent for thieves. they are noisy and you risk getting a bite.

BTW – check your local ordinances, in some states, it is illegal to booby trap your property. if someone is hurt by a trap that you leave on your property or even in your house, you can be sued, and can lose the farm so to speak.

Who in heck puts razor wire and steel spikes in their front??
I am sorry I have my doubts as to the reality of that one.
i mean in all honesty NO one has that much to protect and if you do then you would be hiring security firm around the clock not count on no spikes and wire.

Sorry i would have to see that to believe that one.

As for a way to protect and not be the house picked there are a lot of things you can do.
One is to not have a lot of bushes and hiding places on your property and make sure it is well lit.
Also making sure to have a good alarm system and posting the sign that you do.

And of course a really good dog is helpful but than if they do not want a dog get a recording of one LOL

Pee around your house as you mark your territory. Add the occasional feces. This discourage anybody from meeting your paranoid aunt and uncle.

    get a rottweiler
they are harmless and quite freindly if trained right, but all their bad press plus their intimidating size will deter anyone,
    or anyother dog
my english springer is an awesome guard dog
